Port Elizabeth which is part of the garden route is known by many names and some of the most popular include Nelson Mandela Bay, Windy City and Friendly City. Port Elizabeth has grown considerably over the years and continues to do so by adding more to its ever growing portfolio. Currently its harbour facilities are being expanded making it a major seaport for Southern Africa. It also joined in the festivities of the world cup by having international players, playing at its newly erected sports stadium. Paris Hilton was charged and released on her stay in PE for being in the possession of drugs. She likened the city to the US Miami. Accommodation in Port Elizabeth ranges from 5 Star hotels to cheap backpacker lodgings. Most tourist accommodation and attractions can be found along the beachfront. The beachfront is also home to the casino boardwalk which has family entertainment galore. There is also a lot of lodge accommodation around Port Elizabeth due to the amount of private and national game parks. Just outside PE is the Addo Elephant Park which is home to over 400 elephants. If you ever wanted to get up close and personal with an elephant this would be the place to do it as they have become quite accustomed to the cars. Private game parks include activities like hugging cheetahs, lion cubs and even tiger cubs. Port Elizabeth is well known for hosting sports events. Specsavers 'Ironman' has seen the bay generate a considerable amount of wealth for local government as well as business people. Other yearly events include the Splash Festival and the Ocean Racing Series. The city is also known as the water sports capital and hosts numerous events annually. These can include anything like angling, scuba diving, surfing, windsurfing and kite boarding. Much of the city is in a state of being upgraded but already is showing signs of an even better metropolis that will be geared to safety of its citizens as well as visitors coming to see what it has to offer. Many have come to PE and not been able to leave. It is also a favourite amongst trainee pilots who can get their hours up at a fairer rate.
